Richards’ upbringing gave her something she would later carry into every part of her career: an understanding that talent alone is not enough. Work matters. Character matters. Integrity matters. And so does contribution.
Yet before Hollywood became her professional home, Richards entered the corporate world, working in marketing for American Express, including work connected to travel, sponsorships and branding. It might seem like a detour from acting. In retrospect, it looks more like preparation.
The business experience gave her an understanding of branding, communication, people and strategy—skills that would eventually become invaluable as she moved beyond performing and into producing, podcasting and entrepreneurship. Perhaps the most intimate part of our conversation comes when Richards talks about identity. Born in London and of English and Cameroonian heritage, she has lived across cultures and continents, including time in Africa, Boston and New York before making Beverly Hills her home. From the outside, that sounds wonderfully cosmopolitan. From the inside, it could be complicated.
Richards explains that for much of her life she struggled with where she belonged. She did not always feel entirely at home in either the Black or white community. There were moments of questioning. Moments of insecurity. Moments when she wondered which parts of herself she was supposed to emphasize and which she was supposed to make smaller. Eventually, she discovered a different answer. She didn’t need to choose.
“I don’t have to choose one part of myself over another,” is the essence of what she came to understand. That realization may be one of the most important achievements of her life.

Self-acceptance.
A Black Woman. A British Woman. An African Woman. All Of Them.
Richards identifies proudly as a Black woman and speaks with genuine pride about her African heritage. But she is also candid about the complicated realities of perception. She has experienced prejudice and rejection, including a painful relationship in which a partner’s family did not accept her because she was Black.
Those experiences left their mark. But they did not get the final word. Today, Richards is interested in roles that reflect the complexity of identity—biracial, racially ambiguous and Black characters among them. It is not simply about representation. It is about allowing women to exist without being reduced to a category. Because real people are complicated. And so are the best characters.
The Heartbreak Nobody Sees On A Résumé
There is another kind of vulnerability that comes with speaking honestly about a life in progress. Richards does that when she reflects on love. She has known rejection. She has known betrayal. She has known what it feels like to wonder whether the right person will ever arrive. And she has learned something from it.

She was a young girl drawn to acting whose parents imagined a career in law. She became a corporate marketing professional before returning to the creative world.
